It’s always exciting looking through a jewellery box - we never know what we will find. Often there are gem set rings or gold bracelets but sometimes costume jewellery can be collectable and especially when it was made by a famous designer. Recently we discovered a striking Christian Dior brooch from the 1960’s set with imitation pearls which fetched an amazing £750 in one of our recent jewellery sales.

The term vintage  designer costume jewellery refers to high-quality, non-precious adornments created by well-known fashion houses and jewellery makers, typically dating from the early to late 20th century. Unlike fine jewellery, which uses gold, platinum, and precious gemstones, costume pieces are made from materials such as glass, rhinestones, enamel, and plated metals. Despite this, vintage designer pieces are often highly valued for their craftsmanship, creativity, and historical significance.

Many iconic designers contributed to the popularity of costume jewellery, including Coco Chanel, who revolutionized the concept by encouraging the mixing of real and imitation pieces. Brands like Trifari, Coro, and Monet became renowned for producing stylish, accessible designs that reflected the fashion trends of their time.

These pieces often feature bold designs, intricate detailing, and distinctive signatures or hallmarks that help collectors identify their origins. Popular styles include Art Deco geometric shapes, mid-century floral motifs, and glamorous Hollywood-inspired statement pieces from the 1950s and 1960s.

Collectors are drawn to vintage designer costume jewellery not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its affordability compared to fine jewellery. Rarity, condition, and brand all influence value, with certain limited pieces commanding high prices at auctions.

Today, vintage costume jewellery remains a popular way to express individuality and connect with fashion history. Whether worn casually or as statement accessories, these pieces continue to capture the elegance and innovation of past eras while remaining relevant in contemporary style.
