One of my hobbies is to collect Antique maps especially of places that I have lived or visited.

Collecting antique maps is a rewarding pursuit that blends history, art, and geography into a single, tangible form. These maps are more than navigational tools; they are windows into how people once understood the world. Early examples, such as those influenced by Claudius Ptolemy, reveal a mix of scientific observation and imaginative interpretation, often featuring mythical creatures or incomplete coastlines.

Collectors are drawn to a wide range of maps, from 16th-century Renaissance works to 19th-century exploration charts. Maps produced during the Age of Discovery are especially prized, as they document newly encountered lands and evolving trade routes. The craftsmanship is also a major appeal—many antique maps were hand-coloured and engraved, making each piece unique.

Condition plays a significant role in value. Factors such as paper quality, clarity of detail, and the presence of original colouring all affect desirability. Restored maps can still be valuable, but collectors typically prefer items with minimal alteration. Provenance is equally important, as documentation of a map’s origin or previous ownership can increase both authenticity and worth.

Beginners are often advised to start with a specific theme—such as a particular region or period—to build a focused collection. Another option is to collect maps from a particular maker such as John Speed, John Cary or Emmanuel Bowen.

Ultimately, collecting antique maps offers a meaningful way to connect with the past, combining aesthetic appreciation with the thrill of historical discovery.

Here at Sheffield Auction Gallery we sell a wide variety of Antique Maps in our quarterly Fine Art sales so if this is an interest of yours do come down to one of our viewing days and take a look.
