Plumer was commissioned into 65th Regiment of Foot (later 1st Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment) in 1876. He served with distinction in The Mahdist War at El Teb & Tamai (mentioned in dispatches) and in The Second Boer War at The Relief of Mafeking. By the outbreak of WWI he had achieved a senior rank and he is best remembered for his stunning attack on Messines Ridge in 1917.
