Local MP Meg Munn visits Sheffield Auction Gallery

Sheffield Auction Gallery was visited recently, in August 2011, by local MP Meg Munn. The oldest and largest auction house in the city is situated in her constituency of Sheffield Heeley. She was shown around the site by Director Liz Dashper, who told Meg that there were over 650 lots up for sale in their current auction alone.

The auctions attract a great number of people and with their new facilities; seating and space are no longer an issue. Lots are now shown electronically on computer screens instead of in the traditional way of being held up by porters. Many specialist Auctions also go out live on the internet, with bidders being able to watch and listen to the auction through webcam and register to bid as they wish.

The Gallery deals in specialist items such as Fine Art, Militaria, Furniture and other Antiquities. The highest grossing item sold in the new premises this year was a beautiful Cantonese carved ivory box, sold for £60,000.

Meg commented:

"The Auction house is an example of a thriving local business. They work with charities and help collectors with their passion. Local people are able to purchase one-of-a-kind artwork, furniture, jewellery and other speciality items"
