A few days later came the order that Lord Methuen would start the march to Kimberley on the 21st November, the artillery shelling the enemy occupied hills ahead. Harris goes on to detail further skirmishes and perilous marches (a few soldiers breaking legs) before McVeagh picks up the story during an account of the 25th November 1899. *Jonathan Bower was born in 1889 and joined the army in 1905. He was posted with the 11th Hussars. Early life in the army was spent in India, where he met fellow signaler McCraig. His account details life on the North West frontier and he has drawn a naive map of patrol routes near the Himalayas.
When war was declared in Europe, he was posted with 28th Battery RFA, and arrived in France in 1914. By October 1914 he was involved in skirmishes outside of Mons, and notes in his story that it was here he received his first citation 'for laying telephone wire under heavy fire, for the support of the infantry'. After short respite, he rejoined the front at Rouban and Mons. It was here that a Lieutenant Brown and McCraig were wounded. Bower managed to lift Brown over the parapet and to safety.
The personal account goes on to detail a tour in Mesopotamia and being presented with his DCM in June 1917 by HRH Duke of Connaught. 1918 saw them being subjected to gas attacks by the Germans and "both sides hanging on like grim death". In July 1918 he was wounded by Shrapnel and spent the remainder of the war in hospital. The final pages explain Bower's posting at the anti aircraft battery at Middlewood and his life during WWII.
A fascinating, detailed account that surely deserves publication.
